AROUND 40 of the school's brightest mathematicians took part in the Junior Maths Challenge, organised by the UK Mathematics Trust from the school of mathematics at the University of Leeds.
St Ives annually encourages students to be involved in this activity as it sets them against not only other students in the UK but, if they progress to the next level, against students from all over Europe.
This year's competition included questions such as: Each side of an isosceles triangle is a whole number of centimetres. Its perimeter has length 20cm. How many possibilities are there for the length of its sides?
More than 70 per cent of the current Year 11 students have already achieved at least a C grade at GCSE and all bar two have achieved a G grade or higher.
Their progress since Year 6 is also above national standards with 74 per cent already having made at least three levels of progress with all ability groups doing better than comparable peers across the country.
This data is based on the student performance so far and is expected to improve further with the small groups of students who still have exams to do in June.
