TWO seagulls were shot dead by someone with an air rifle in the centre of Penzance on Monday evening. The seagulls are believed to have been shot while perching on a roof at Voundervour Lane, connecting Chapel and Queen streets, one of them ending up impaled on a fence spike. The shootings follow on from similar similar incidents in the same area of Penzance in April. Then around a dozen herring gulls, jackdaws and pigeons were shot and killed in the space of a few weeks. PC Ali Harvey, Penzance's neighbourhood team manager, said: "Quite apart from the alarm and distress this has caused to residents in the area, I would like to remind whoever did this that he or she is committing two offences. "It is an offence to use an airgun in a public space and, in addition, all species of gull are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981. "We will be vigilant about this and will be patrolling the area in unmarked vehicles." Anyone with any information about the incidents should contact PC Harvey on 101.
