A change in the law has led to a huge increase in gambling adverts on TV, according to new research. Statistics compiled by communications watchdog Ofcom found there were 1.39 million gambling adverts on television last year, compared to just 152,000 in 2006. Adverts for gambling used to be restricted to the national lottery, football pools and bingo halls until a change in the law liberalised the situation in September 2007. Researchers found the number of adverts rose to more than half-a-million in 2008 after that and continued to climb.
