A PUBLIC meeting is being held in Launceston to gauge people's views about a controversial new proposed development, including for 100 new homes, on the edge of the town.
Cornwall Council is holding the meeting in a fortnight on the plans for land north of Upper Chapel in Launceston.
The application, by Hallam Land Management Ltd, based in Bristol, is for a mixed use development including housing, a play area and extension to a cemetery.
There is already huge opposition to the scheme, with residents concerned about congestion on narrow roads including a primary school and hundreds of existing homes leading to the proposed development. Launceston Town Council has registered an objection, saying the highway issues, including narrow access and approach roads, and lack of parking, do not appear to have been addressed.
The town council says the site is not in the town framework plan, and the housing need can be fulfilled elsewhere. It adds that the site is unsuitable and risks flooding.
The public meeting will be held in the main hall of Launceston Town Hall on Wednesday, September 18, at 6pm.
"We on the strategic planning committee want to listen to the views of those who want to have their say on the application," said Councillor Rob Nolan, chairman of Cornwall Council's strategic planning committee.
Anyone who attends the meeting who wishes to express their views on the planning application will be asked to register on arrival and will then be called upon to speak.
The public meeting is an opportunity for councillors to hear from local people on all sides of the debate and no decision will be taken on the day.
The planning application will be considered by the strategic planning committee at a meeting scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 24.
