THE SHIP responsible for depositing the lethal substance which resulted in the UK's worst seabird pollution disaster in decades will not be held accountable due to a lack of evidence, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has announced.
In spring this year more than 4,000 guillemots, razorbills and other rare birds were killed by a substance identified by experts as polyisobutylene, or PIB, a glue-like lubricating additive typically found in engine oils.
The MCA launched an investigation to find the ship responsible for dumping the waste, which has now been closed due to a lack of evidence.
The marine safety body said it had collected data from all the vessels that passed through the region and looked through their detailed cargo manifests.
