FORGET the royal baby – the amount of attention surrounding the birth of Hayle's red panda twins has led to the launch of a 24-hour live PandaCam.

Public interest was piqued when one of Paradise Park's exotic residents – a red panda called Jai-Li – started to put on weight in June but an ultrasound procedure did not show any babies.

Then on July 4 the two-year-old gave birth to twins.

The siblings, which look more like kittens than panda bears at birth, are still being nurtured by their mum. But pressure from the public, who were captivated by the story and the dedication of keeper Donna Sinclair, who was one of the babies' first visitors despite being pregnant herself, has led to put their PandaCam live online 24 hours a day.

Director Alison Hales said: "There is a big screen at the park so visitors can also see into the den. The cubs will be inside for about two or three months before we get our first real sight of them.

"We are finding that the cubs sleep for a lot of time, and Jai-Li often spends several hours outside eating and snoozing.

"But then there is a period of activity when she goes back in and they climb all over her and feed. They are increasingly moving about the den and I've seen her pick one up in her mouth to bring it back so she can groom it."

Paradise Park staff are running a Pandamonium Weekend this weekend with the chance to be a red panda ranger.
