JOBSEEKERS from Liskeard have been rolling up their sleeves to help transform a derelict house in Duloe into a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.
The group, who have all enrolled on a construction skills course with Cornwall College, were assigned to lend a hand to Looe-based charity Ellie's Haven.
Karley Keast from Liskeard said he was inspired to continue volunteering at the project after taking part in the scheme.
"I've never actually started something and finished it so I get the sense I've really achieved something with this project," the 23-year-old said.
"I've offered to carry on helping with the project because I've got two kids of my own.
"They don't have the needs Ellie had but I can relate to what it might be like if they did.
"It'll give me trade experience and Nigel's a good bloke; he needs all the help he can get."
Nigel and Julie Libby established the charity Ellie's Haven with the hope of providing holidays for families with children suffering from life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses.
The charity was set up in honour of their daughter Ellie, who was born with a rare brain disorder and who died last year just before her seventh birthday.
Mr Libby said: "A couple of the guys are going to volunteer and if we can inspire others to do that in the future then we will. I'm often here on my own so to see the activity is really motivating and to know that the college is coming back is great."
Jobcentre Plus is working with Cornwall College to find suitable work placements for candidates who have completed the construction course.
