Police watchdogs have confirmed they will take charge of an investigation into the death of a man whose yacht was found with £20million worth of cocaine on board when it was raided on the Isles of Scilly.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said it will manage the inquiry in the fatality, but not the illegal substances found on board.

The man, believed to be 62, was aboard the Windrose when it was boarded by Border Force officers on Monday, June 17.

He later died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The cause has not yet been established, but information provided by the officers present suggested he fell or jumped from the ship's mast.

Border Force officers referred the death to the IPCC, who have confirmed they will oversee an externally-managed investigation by Devon and Cornwall police.

Preliminary investigations have been carried out and efforts are still under way to contact the family of the man, who is believed to be from the Netherlands.

IPCC Commissioner Jennifer Izekor said it would be a thorough inquiry.

"The IPCC investigation will focus on the contact between UK Border Force officers and the deceased, and examine the events leading up to his death to ensure that all relevant policies and procedures including adequate risk assessments were followed," she said.

The IPCC said it was not investigating any issues relating to the substances retrieved from the Windrose.
