From stunning coastlines and beautiful beaches to award-winning fish markets and iconic hotels.

The Westcountry has long been admired for the attractiveness of its coastline and it has now been captured in a new book which celebrates the charm and exuberance of the English seaside.

Included in the book by English Heritage, entitled The English Seaside are Brixham Fish Market, the Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel and the Jubilee Clock Tower in Exmouth.

Lavishly illustrated with colourful images, the book's photographer, Peter Williams, explored more than 170 beaches in Britain to try to capture the juxtaposition of nostalgia and modernisation.

He said: "For too long the seaside has suffered from bad press. It is accused of being tatty, of being moribund, of being the 'Costa Geriatrica'. But I have found the seaside to be warm-hearted, welcoming and positive.

"It's not simply the ozone that draws the visitor to the comfort of a hotel with sea views, but some inner need to commune with nature and return to the sea. It's also about having fun. Above all, it is having the freedom to wander and to build sandcastles, dam streams and bury dad up to his neck in the sand."

The book, which contains more than 600 images, costs £14.99 and is available from May 27.
