The Mormon church has admitted it was wrong to approach a schoolboy on the street in Falmouth asking him to meet them in a nearby park to discuss their beliefs. A complaint was made to the police after the 14-year-old was approached by some men from the Helston-based Church of Latter Day Saints. They had been speaking to people on the street to recruit them to the church. The police have spoken to the church about the matter, but said no criminal offence has been disclosed at this time. Sergeant Phil Binnie said: "We have been contacted by the boy's father. "Officers are aware of the presence of the Mormon's and have spoken to them whilst on their rounds. "Since then they have been spoken to and given words of advice regarding their 'approach', especially when talking with young people." The boy claimed the men spoke to him and suggested he meet them in Kimberley Park without telling his parents - although the church denies this. They gave him a card with the name Elder Baron and a phone number and website on it. One of the men who spoke to the youth refused to be named but said he was an elder. He said: "We were wrong. We try to make an effort not to speak to anyone under 18, but from now on we will ask them their age first. "We asked to speak to him at the house, but he said no so we suggested he meet us in the park "I deny any suggestion he shouldn't tell his parents." Despite the boy being in uniform as he walked home from school near Dracaena Avenue and Grenville Road, the man said he did not realise. He said: "I am not from around her and didn't know it was a school uniform." Matthew Clarke, a friend of the family, said they were angry about the incident. "They only got away with it because they gave him a card from a church. "If you take that away you are left with men approaching a young boy asking him to meet them in a park." "Parents should be aware of what is happening."
