A Penryn butcher will be expanding his business and employing more staff after securing £143,000 investment.

RJ Trevarthan has already transformed from a 'one man and his van' operation in the 1980s to a business with 24 vehicles and 65 staff.

But the grant from the Business Catalyst Fund will enable him to expand into export markets and take on six more staff.

The money will go towards a £357,000 project to expand the Roskrow facility, providing more operating and storage space.

Owner and founder Robert Trevarthen said: "roughly as eighth of our business now comes from abroad - we started selling cattle to Holland and Belgium three years ago and the Chinese market has opened up too.

"We can't be held back by not having enough space or the right facilities. This project as a whole is a great thing for us.

"It will not only create jobs, but continue to support our existing employees and the network of small farmers who provide us with the best local produce."

The catalyst fund is a £5 million investment scheme, funded by the Regional Growth Fund to help businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly improve productivity and create jobs.

RJ Trevarthen sells all meats and supplies restaurants, independent butchers, catering companies, pubs, hotels and farmers markets.
