Devon tee off their regional Channel League title defence against cross-Tamar rivals Cornwall on Sunday at Tavistock Golf Club (9.30am).

An extra edge added to the annual pre-season opener is that Cornwall – pipped 8-7 at Mullion in last year's clash – finished runner-up in last year's competition.

The opening match of this summer's season-long competition could again have a bearing on which side of the Tamar the title finishes this year.

Yelverton's Adam Bridgewater won the league in his first season as player-captain and will be anxious for another successful Devon year.

Bridgewater has recalling experienced former county stalwart Alan Gawman for the opening fixture. Gawman's home club is Tavistock and he knows the course like the back of his hand.

Otherwise Bridgewater's team has a familiar look as does the Cornwall ten , which does – however – include young debutant Joe Yorke, from St Mellion.

Devon: David Ashley (Royal North Devon) David Blick (East Devon) Adam Bridgewater (Yelverton, captain) Sam Edwards (Bigbury) Alan Gawman (Tavistock) Jimmy Mullen (RND) Ryan Pope (Exeter) Dan Rosevear (Yelverton) James Smith (Yelverton) Matt Wells (Saunton).

Cornwall: Richard Ackland (Trevose) Joe Cruse (St Enodoc) Chris Fleming (Perranporth) Josh Greenaway (Bowood Park) Harry Hall (West Cornwall) Richard Jasper (Launceston) Jon Hancock (Newquay) Matt Lock (Newquay) Matt Richards (West Cornwall) Joe Yorke (St Mellion).

Rarely has Cornwall golf started a summer season with such a high profile.

As recently reported, county development officer Simon Wood has helped launched a new television feature dedicated to golf in Cornwall.

This weekend Wood will drive an early season campaign to get more Cornish people playing golf with the launch of the annual Cornwall Golf Week. He said: "Golf is a great game and this is the perfect time of year to start."

The action starts with city centre taster days tomorrow and Friday at Truro's Lemon Quay, where passers-by will be invited to try golf.

From Saturday until Sunday week (April 14) a total of 25 Cornish golf clubs and ranges will be offering free taster sessions for newcomers and returners to the game.

There will be plenty of follow-on opportunities, with all clubs offering a low-cost five-week programme of structured group coaching straight after the week.

Cornwall Golf Week is part of a festival of golf weeks being held across the South West this spring, which support the national Get into Golf campaign.

Cornwall Golf Partnership's Wood commented: "We are hoping to attract hundreds of people to start playing. Last year 500 people had a go and we want to do better this year."
