A date has been set for the inquest into the death of a young surfer whose body was discovered in mysterious circumstances on a Cornish beach.

Holidaymaker Oliver Doy, 26, went missing at around midnight on Saturday, January 7, last year after leaving Sailors' nightclub in Newquay. His passport was found on Tolcarne beach, but his mobile phone could not be found.

A police trace on the phone discovered it was activated four days later, prompting an urgent – but futile – appeal for the person who used it to come forward.

Mr Doy's body was discovered by a dog-walker on January 13 and detectives confirmed they were not treating the death as suspicious.

The Plymouth University graduate, from Hook in Hampshire, was spotted on CCTV walking past the cinema with a man and two women, who have not yet been identified. Mr Doy, a healthcare assistant with the NHS, had been wearing a grey zip-up hoodie with grey and pink trainers.

It is hoped the inquest, set for May 31 at Truro Coroner's Court, will shed light on how Mr Doy died and what happened to his phone.

At the time of his death a police spokesman said: "At this time the police are treating this as a non-suspicious death inquiry.

"As always, though, we are keeping an open mind to the investigation and welcome any information from members of the public, including the people seen with him walking up behind the cinema."

More than 30 people paid tribute to Mr Doy on Facebook, with many describing him as a "genuine nice guy" and "a gentleman".

Richard Good, who made the trip down to the resort with Oliver and another pal, wrote: "Miss you so, so much Oli. The best brother and friend you could ever be." "
