Newquay 1 Bodmin Town 1
Newquay made Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division leaders Bodmin fight all the way for a point in a controversial Good Friday morning clash at a bitterly cold and windy Mount Wise.
Striker Luke Weldhen gave the Peppermints a deserved 17th minute lead with a fierce finish from 15 yards and it took Bodmin, defending a 25-match unbeaten record away in the league, until the 59th minute to level the scores.
But the real drama came in time added on at the end of the game as referee Tim Burley rejected strong Newquay appeals for a penalty in the last move of the match after Weldhen went down under a challenge from Huw Morgan.
Newquay's players and officials were convinced Mr Burley should have pointed to the spot, but he waved away their protests. Seconds earlier one of his linesmen had signalled for a Newquay goal kick after home goalkeeper Tom Blackler had made a brilliant save to deny Adam Carter.
Newquay started the game well and were rewarded with a 17th minute lead when Weldhen, who was adjudged to be in line with the last defender, ran clear and blasted his shot past Kevin Miller.
Bodmin equalised when Sam Matthews' shot from the right side of the penalty area beat Newquay keeper Blackler and struck the inside of a post but bounced out and skipper Tom Chambers was on hand to finish from six yards.
Bodmin dominated possession from then on but they were indebted to goalkeeper Miller for a magnificent save in the 74th minute which denied Ollie Deadman a goal from a thunderous strike.
This came six minutes after Mamy Sabo, up for a corner, sent a header towards the net but somehow Bodmin striker Adam Carter got his head in the way to keep it out.
Carter then missed a good opportunity in the 81st minute at the other end, half volleying high and wide from 15 yards after a great burst along the left and cross by Luke Rundle.
