Minister urged to do more for flood support

Ian Liddell-Grainger MP has written to farming minister David Heath to complain about the Government's failure to support farmers over flooding on the Somerset Levels.

Mr Liddell-Grainger, MP for the Bridgwater constituency, recently hosted a visit from Chris Smith, chairman of the Environment Agency.

Mr Liddell-Grainger said: "Chris Smith did indeed promise money would be spent alleviating the problems down there, and soon.

"But it's one thing to give an assurance when you are face to face with some disgruntled farmers whose land is now fit only for rice-growing, quite another when you have scuttled back to your office and the pressure is on to skew the budget in favour of urban areas.

"I can assure you that even though only a tiny corner of my constituency is currently affected by the floods I shall continue to make life very difficult indeed for a few people until we start to see practical measures being put in place to help farmers, as opposed to watching millions of pounds being squandered on an ill-conceived 'flood defence' scheme down on the coast," said Mr Liddell-Grainger.
