Yeovil Town manager Gary Johnson will only dip into the transfer market if members of his squad regularly disappoint.

The Glovers welcome Colchester United to Huish Park tonight in the Capital One Cup first round with just 18 registered players but without Rohan Ince and Gavin Williams. Loanee Ince is back at parent club Chelsea receiving treatment on a shin injury sustained at Newport County almost a fortnight ago, while Williams has a calf problem.

Johnson said he would monitor both his own players and those on a list of targets to ensure his team was always at its strongest.

"We are going to keep looking and when the right one becomes available and I see players dropping below the standard needed I will move," he said. "As and when. If people let us down often then we obviously will not wait."

The Glovers entertain npower League One rivals Colchester looking to progress beyond the first round of the newly-branded Capital One Cup for the first time in four years.

Johnson said the encounter may come too soon for Ince and Williams, but was more hopeful of their chances of making Saturday's game against Coventry City.

The Midlanders have reportedly sold their entire ticket allocation for their first game following relegation from the Championship.

Johnson said: "Incey is having an injection on Monday which won't make him alright for Tuesday but will make him alright for Saturday.

"Gav has got his heart set on next weekend but we will have to wait and see. We need all the players available to us if we need to change anything for these important games."

Johnson has left his team in no doubt about the importance of a strong start to the new season after an uninspiring end to pre-season.

They signed off with a drab 2-2 draw with npower League Two outfit Exeter City, parity salvaged by Reuben Reid's last gasp equaliser.

So disappointed was Johnson with his team's performance that the Glovers reported for training on Sunday.

Speaking after the game he said: "The lads now know and have been left in no doubt how important Tuesday and Saturday are to this football club and again if they want to be a long term part of it they need to brighten up.

"This will be their first taste of Sunday training because they have got to know what happens when it doesn't quite work.

"Some of them tried hard and their games didn't come out but some of their game didn't come out and they didn't try either so they will be the ones that will miss church tomorrow morning."

Having started the week without a shirt sponsor, main strip backer W and S Recycling – unveiled on Friday – and Domenico Taravella of Italian restaurant Tamburino, who will adorn the back of the tops, watched on as the Glovers scraped a draw.

Scott Bennett gave Exeter an early lead before Ed Upson levelled from distance. John O'Flynn restored the Grecians' advantage from the spot before Reid ensured honours were shared with almost the last kick of the game, a day after the second anniversary of striker Adam Stansfield's death.

Johnson said: "Deep down I am pleased we got the equaliser because it gave us an unbeaten pre-season but I wasn't pleased with our overall performance. Hopefully this is the little spur that gets them all lively and buzzing."
