The driver was cut free from the mangled wreckage of this Land Rover and taken to hospital by ambulance with "serious but not life-threatening injuries".
The 37-year-old man, from Cullompton, is thought to have collided into the back of a lorry, on the A38 in Devon yesterday morning.
Police described his silver Discovery as "unrecognisable" following the collision, after which it left the highway and became lodged in a roadside hedge.
It is believed the man, who was travelling alone in the 4X4, collided with the articulated Renault lorry as the truck turned into a yard near the Poacher's Pocket pub in Burlescombe shortly after 6.30am on Friday.
Two fire engines from Wellington and a rescue tender from Taunton attended the scene.
The man was still in the vehicle but was not trapped. Crews freed him by removing the door with cutting equipment.
Police confirmed that the man suffered leg, head and chest injuries and possibly a broken arm.
He was taken by road ambulance to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.
He then underwent tests to determine the seriousness of his injuries.
The lorry driver was uninjured in the crash. The dual carriageway road between the B3391 for Wellington and Broad Path in Appledore was blocked in both directions for several hours while police organised the recovery of the vehicle but it reopened later in the morning.
A police spokesman said: "A Land Rover Discovery and a Renault lorry collided at 6.33am. The driver of the Land Rover suffered serious bit not life-threatening injuries."
