Milder than average temperatures, little rain and clear skies have left the region basking in a relatively warm autumnal glow.
Forecasters say there is still no sign of any severe weather on the way but the mercury is set to plunge, possibly even as low as freezing, in some areas over the weekend.
Devon and Cornwall enjoyed yet another cloudy but dry day yesterday with light winds and a maximum temperature of 9C. But the odd shower has been predicted for today with the day growing colder as evening approaches, to around 4C and 0C overnight in rural areas.
The Met Office said winter officially begins on Monday but the outlook remains fair for next week.
Forecaster Laura Young said seasonal figures due out this week would probably be close to the norm with recent wet and cold weather evening out with the warmer spells.
"It is going to get colder as the day goes on Friday, probably 4C in Plymouth and colder in rural areas.
"The main outlook is dry and very settled other than a bit of rain during the day on Friday, mostly around coastal areas.
"It has been a bit milder than usual but we are looking at a possible cold area coming down from Scotland."
Bude and Camborne both saw temperatures of close to 9C yesterday at 7am. The five-day forecast promises more of the same next week but there are "early indications" that a cold snap will follow, though exactly how cold is unclear.
