Plymouth MP Oliver Colvile pushes for better rail links to region

A Westcountry MP has renewed his attempt to force a Commons debate on improving vital rail links between London and Plymouth.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin this week suggested Plymouth could be in line for better rail links following the closure of the city's airport in 2011.

He also said there is "no doubt" the A303 cross-country road between the South West and London needs upgrading, but warned it will "take time" after a feasibility study was commissioned this summer.

During Business of the House Questions in Parliament, Oliver Colvile, Conservative MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, called for a debate on the issue of better connections following "repeated failed requests".

Transport in the South West is in a state of flux amid the study into upgrading the A303 bottleneck, the delayed renewal of the Great Western rail franchise and falling passenger numbers at regional airports.

Mr Colvile said: "Specifically to deliver growth, I have been campaigning for the A303 to be dualled, for trains to get into Plymouth by 9am, rather than 11.17 am, and for more train journeys to and from London.

"After repeated failed requests for a debate, will he support my calls for a debate on this important matter, or at the very least may we have a statement from the Secretary of State?"

Andrew Lansley, the Leader of the House, said he "raises an issue that is important not only to his constituents, but to those of other MPs in that travel corridor in the South West", but did not grant a debate.

He added: "Given that wider interest, he might find that there is a wider constituency of MPs who might be able to seek a debate.

"I certainly encourage him in that regard.

"He knows that the Transport Secretary was with him in his constituency over the summer to discuss those issues.

"I will of course ask him to respond further, but it is very much in the minds of ministers, not least because they have a feasibility study looking at some of the most notorious hot spots on roads across the country, including the A303, the A30 and the A358 in that travel corridor."
