Thanksgiving has been marked in Plymouth as part of an official celebration of the traditional American holiday.

The ceremony began with the flag of the United States being raised at the Guildhall.

Members of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership (PWP), escorted the Assistant Naval Attache from the United States Navy at the event, which continued on the historic Mayflower Steps, on the Barbican.

Plymouth Pipe Band performed, as well as a poetry reading and musical performance from schoolchildren.

The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Vivien Pengelly, represented the city, and made a speech alongside Chris Arscott from PWP and US Senator Patty Murray.

Councillor Pengelly said: "We raised the American flag on Royal Parade initially, and then continued to the Barbican. I was pleasantly surprised at how many people turned out for the ceremony. Pupils from the schools read out some lovely poetry about Thanksgiving and there were a number of American families there who had come from outside Plymouth to mark the occasion.

"It is one of the only places where the day is celebrated outside London, so it was fantastic to be joined by them.

"It was a really nice ceremony and they seemed to enjoy it very much."
