THE Fishwives Choir – including Newlyn singer Hannah Pascoe – have been told they could have the Christmas number one single.

All wives or daughters of fishermen, many of whom have lost loved ones at sea, they formed the choir to raise funds for the Fishermen's Mission.

They have now been told by a producer at the BBC Radio One chart show to say they are one of the acts in contention.

Hannah said: "What we need is everyone to start downloading the single from iTunes after December 16 to be in with a chance. We need Cornwall to get behind us."

Bookmaker Coral is offering odds of 20-1 on the double A-side single, featuring the fishing song When The Boat Comes In and the hymn Eternal Father, topping the hit parade on December 25.
