PENZANCE'S business community will give their views on how best to spend Sainsbury's Section 106 funds next Thursday, October 3.
Penzance Chamber of Commerce is holding a members' meeting in The Workbox to discuss town centre issues with Guy Thomas, Cornwall Council's town centre management specialist, the guest speaker.
Currently Penzance Town Council is in line to receive £249,500 to fund measures to mitigate the impact of the new Sainsbury's store upon Penzance businesses. £20,000 of this fund has already been committed to supporting the creation of the Penzance Business Improvement District, preparations for which started on September 5.
As previously reported in The Cornishman, the question has been raised whether the £1.2 million committed to support the creation of a park and ride car park adjacent to the new Sainsbury's store cannot be better spent on town centre measures.
Chamber chairman Dick Cliffe said: "This meeting will be a good opportunity for businesses to get briefed on town centre initiatives and the content of the Penzance Sainsbury's Section 106 agreement.
"It is also an opportunity to express a view about priorities for improving the trading environment in the town centre.
"Penzance Chamber of Commerce has no control over how Section 106 monies are spent but it needs to know its members views as it is likely to be consulted on the matter."
