The formative history of one of the world's most famous shipping companies – P&O – will be explored in an engaging talk at Cornwall's Maritime Museum on Wednesday.
David Pollard will reveal the amazing story of how, and why, two young Scottish entrepreneurs formed a London-based ship broking partnership in 1822, subsequently took over some Falmouth Packet routes in 1837 and in 1840 set up The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company.
The talk will also explore the pioneering development of liner routes to the Iberian peninsula and the Mediterranean and the fulfilment of the founding partners' dream to reach the Orient.
"Having worked on the cruise ships as a speaker for many years, the story of the founding of P&O is one that fascinates me, especially with its Falmouth connections," Mr Pollard said.
"The story is one full of intrigue and challenges."
