Cheers erupted from around Newquay yesterday when the home team secured a victory in the women's county gig championships.

Newquay Ladies A team powered across the finish line, having led from the start of the final.

Coxswain Steve Jones said the team – Jenna Paull, Debbie Blight, Nicola Hazel, Natalie Silverthorne, Bec McCowen Brown and Ali Bevis – had done a fantastic job.

"They did brilliantly," he said.

"It's great to see that all their hard work has paid off.

"It is a relatively new crew and they have been working hard.

"I think there was a great deal of expectation on the team and there were a lot of sleepless nights. But it all came together."

He said the victory, after two days of intense competition, had been warmly greeted by the crowds assembled round Newquay harbour and in the boats following the race.

"The support from the boats following the race was amazing," said Mr Jones.

"We could hear the cheers coming from the quayside as we came in.

"It was fantastic."

In second place was the A crew from Mounts Bay, with Caradon A in third and Fowey A in fourth position.

This year world champions Falmouth A were favourites to retain the county title.

The team, which has a number of new members, did make the final, but came fifth.
