MORE fresh fish has come to Penzance after a new pop-up shop arrived this week.
Mousehole Fish set up at Crouse Corner on Tuesday and has been offering everything from spider crab claws to red mullet.
The business is owned by Emma Kane and Colin Hedger and after the pair inquired with Pop Up Penzance, which aims to bring community and enterprise to underused spaces in the town centre, launched the temporary outlet for a four-week period.
Emma said the organisation had been really supportive and there had been a steady stream of people through the door on the opening day.
"We heard about the opportunity and got in touch – they have been absolutely brilliant," she said.
"They soon asked if we wanted to give it a go and we thought, 'why not?'. It's new to us but we're enjoying it.
"It's been slow and steady really, but we've had lots of people in to have a look and ask questions about the fish."
The shop will be open for a four-week period, though Emma said if things go well she and partner Mr Hedger may look at something more permanent.
"I hope it takes off," she said. "But there might be a reason why there aren't many fishmongers in Penzance.
"I think it's the same as any retail outlet here: it's about surviving the winter – that is the problem. Fish isn't different to any other shop."
Mousehole Fish was set up a year ago after Mr Hedger decided to end his 17 years as a fisherman and start buying and selling direct from boats.
Miss Kane stopped her full-time job a month ago to keep up with demand after sales to the public and local pubs and restaurants were increasingly positive.
Now the pair are hoping the good trade continues, with Miss Kane adding she aims to catch people coming home from work in the evening at the store.
Pop Up Penzance's Rachel Martin was eager for the fishmonger to succeed.
"We're really excited to support Mousehole Fish," she said. "They are a small local company – we need to support our local businesses if we want them to survive, so we hope people give them a go."
Miss Kane said she and Mr Hedger source the best of the day's catch early every morning and can offer filleting as well as advice about how best to cook the produce.
The shop, at the bottom of Market Jew Street, is open from 10am to 6pm to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
