Holidaymakers and day trippers have been encouraged to head West this bank holiday weekend with the region set to be amongst the warmest places in the country.

Around one million motorists are expected to hit Devon and Cornwall's roads drawn in by the good weather, with temperatures reaching a high of 22C on Sunday.

With London, the South East and East Anglia forecast rain for both today and tomorrow, the region and other parts of the west of the UK, will be most sought after for good weather.

Matt Dobson, a forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather arm of the Press Association, said: "It's really an east-west split in the weather on Saturday, where west is definitely best.

"There will be sunny spells and generally dry weather in western areas, whereas in eastern areas it will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain."

Bank holiday Monday is forecast to be dry and warm with plenty of sunshine in the South West.

But with the good forecast comes the usual heavy holiday traffic, with queues predicted on all main routes to the most popular parts of the region.

Traffic was expected to be worst on the traditional holiday routes.
