Tributes have been paid to a "valued" community member in Par who died following an incident on Saturday morning.

Three men and a boy were arrested on suspicion of murder following the incident but have since been bailed.

Colin Palmer, 57, a keen euchre player and stock car enthusiast, was raced to Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske in the early hours of Saturday morning but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Emergency services had been called to assist the 57-year-old as he lay unconscious on St Marys Road, Biscovey, Par, shortly after 2am.

Three men aged 21, 19 and 18 years old and a 16-year-old boy were all promptly arrested in a nearby property on suspicion of murder and yesterday were released on bail until November pending further enquiries.

The death of the popular community member has sent shockwaves through his local neighbourhood near St Austell, with dozens taking to social networking sites to pay tribute to him.

Glyn Price, landlord of the nearby Carlyon Arms, where Mr Palmer was a regular and drank the night before he died, said a collection had been started to pay for a wreath.

He added that locals were considering placing a plaque on the wall of the pub to remember him, as well as dedicating a trophy to the keen euchre player.

"He was a regular here and had been for many years," he said. "He was an inoffensive man, who was a complete pacifist. He will be greatly missed. He was in here seven days a week, but he wasn't an excessive drinker, it was a social thing for him. I have been a landlord here since 2001 and he's been a regular in that time.

"All the regulars are completely devastated. I just can't believe that he passed away but in such circumstances. He was just the sort of bloke who would never have got into any violent situations."

St Blaise Town Council, and Cornwall councillor for Par and St Blazey Gate, Doug Scrafton, also released a tribute.

They said: "It is with dismay that we learn of the death in such horrific circumstances of a valued member of our community. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends, to whom we offer our heartfelt sympathy and condolences.

"There is nothing we can say or do at this time that will ease the pain and suffering that they are experiencing, but we hope that it will help in some small measure for them to know that they are very much in our thoughts, and those of the whole community."

Writing on social networking site Twitter, Liam Nicholls said: "R.I.P uncle Col, I will miss you!! #loveyou".

Paul Jasper wrote on Facebook: "Will miss you mate was proud to have known you mate."

Anyone with information on the incident should call 101 quoting log number 139 of 17/08/2013.
