NEWQUAY residents have launched a campaign to get a new children's play park built in the town.
More than 800 people have liked campaign page New Park For Newquay on social networking site Facebook.
The vision involves replacing the existing park at Trenance valley with a new modern version which supporters say hope the facility would be used by both residents and tourists – but Newquay's Cornwall councillors appear to be divided over the need for one.
The anonymous campaign page founder writes on Facebook: "Being a parent of two children between the ages of 2 and 11 I have found it unbelievable that Newquay does not have a central park.
"Trenance park offers the perfect location for a modern and exciting park to be built to replace the old boring one.
"A new park is sorely needed; it will be great for our kids and good for local businesses as it will attract more tourists during the season if it is advertised as Newquay's central park.
"We need your help as parents to share this and like it with everyone you can, so that the councillors listen and I can make this happen."
Pat Lambshead, who is the Cornwall councillor for the Tretherras ward, which covers Trenance Valley, said there were already lots of facilities in the area which he described as excellent.
"You've got the bowling for the elderly, playing equipment for the young kids, another park for the older kids; you've got the pitch-and-putt next to that; then you have the lake with canoes and then there's Waterworld swimming pool," Mr Lambshead said.
"What more do you want? I just wish I was a kid."
However, Dave Sleeman, Cornwall councillor for Treloggan, agreed with the campaign. "I'm working on getting more play equipment in Treloggan," he said. "The town needs more play equipment."
