A Helston-based artist has seen her painting of frogs short listed out of more than 3,000 artists for a prestigious £30,000 art prize. Nicola Bealing, who has been painting in Cornwall for 25 years, was selected out of 3,500 artists across the UK for the Threadneedle Prize for painting & sculpture. The artist is based in the the former Passmore Edwards community centre - renamed 'CAST', Cornubian Arts and Science Trust, where she created 'Plague Season'. Visitors to the Mall Galleries, in central London, can also cast their vote for Nicola's work to give her the chance of winning an extra £10,000 Visitors Choice Award. The Threadneedle Prize win ner will be announced on September 24. The Mall Galleries exhibition will open the following day and run until October 9. Speaking from her Helston studio, Nicola told the West Briton that she didn't expect to win, saying: "It is a prestigious award and I am just pleased to have been short listed out of so many artists. "I would be chuffed if I won and would benefit from the exposure that it would bring, it would be a real career boost." The Threadneedle Prize sets out to raise the profile of contemporary representational art, with previous winners including Nina Murdoch, now represented by Marlborough Fine Art, and Rose Wylie, who is currently on show at Tate Britain.
