Candidates have been announced for a by-election to contest the Cornwall Council seat left vacant when Collin Brewer quit following comments that disabled children should be "put down".

Former Conservative cabinet member Stephen Rushworth, who lost his Padstow seat in the May election, is to stand in the constituency held by Mr Brewer, an Independent, for decades.

Independent Tony Rush, Adrian Darrell Jones, the Labour candidate, Liberal Democrat Steve Knightley, and Rod Harrison, for the UK Independence Party, complete the line up for the vote on Thursday, September 5.

The Wadebridge East division extends beyond the town boundary to include two wards from the neighbouring parishes of Egloshayle and St Kew, with a total electorate of 3,217, the council said.

Mr Brewer, 68,was censured by the council for his "grossly offensive" comments that linked disabled children to deformed lambs.

He resigned his seat following the row over his comments, made in 2011, then won it back in the election in May.

Following further pressure from Mr Brewer stood down for the second time, sparking a new election.
