THE GOLDEN postbox that marks Penzance and Newlyn golden girl Helen Glover's Olympic achievement has a new addition – a commemorative plaque.

The plaque was added by Royal Mail this week and was welcomed by Helen's family – who turned out in force to have a look.

Helen, who went to Mounts Bay School, won Team GB's first gold medal at London 2012 – a heartbeat ahead of her rowing partner Heather Stanning – in the women's pairs. The medal was also the first Olympic gold to be won by British female rowers.

The plaque reads: "This postbox has been painted gold by Royal Mail to celebrate Helen Glover Gold Medal winner London 2012 Olympic Games Rowing: Women's Pairs."

Mum Rachel, dad Jimmy and sister Ruth Glover all visited the new plaque on Tuesday to have a look.

Helen's mum Rachel Glover said: "The golden postbox is great but it is much nicer to have the plaque.

"While we were there a lot of people came and had a look at it.

"A lot of people obviously did not know it was for Helen or even that Helen was from Penzance, so it is really nice to know they can read about why it is here.

"And it is also written in Braille [the language for the blind] underneath, which is rather nice."
