Having recently read in the WMN, the date and information of the forthcoming Cornwall Council by election for the Wadebridge East ward. This by-election was created by the resignation of Mr Collin Brewer. I thought it would be a good time to add some home truths to the subject. The first of the home truths is the way in which Collin Brewer was treated by all forms of the local news media, it would be difficult to say who the worst offenders were, but this newspaper and BBC spotlight news, must be quite near the top of the list.
Mr Collin Brewer could not have been worst treated if he had been a serial murderer or rapist. When you consider some of the horrific crimes that were in the headlines at the time that Collin Brewer was standing trial by the news media, cases such as: the Royal Fusilier who was hacked to death on a London street, at least two young children murdered by their parents, six Muslim men all receiving very long life prison sentences for planning to kill, and use explosives against members of the public, and finally three Polish people sentenced to long life custody, for murdering a young Chard graduate, who was the girlfriend of one of the murderers. All these cases were in the news for a relatively short time, compared to the long drawn out persecution of Mr Brewer, which lasted from late April 2013, a few weeks before the county elections, until his second resignation on the July 10, 2013.
When you consider that whatever Collin Brewer said to the disabilities charity worker, took place some 18 months ago and only came to public knowledge a few weeks before the Cornwall County elections, this seems a little odd. No one except Collin Brewer and the charity worker know what was exactly said, and in what context it was said. The same applies to his interview with the Disabilities news service, when Mr Brewer's answers were taken completely out of context. It's obvious very few people know the real facts of what was said and in what context it was said, therefore all the reports by the news media were based on hearsay. Unfortunately I don't think Collin Brewer is very good at explaining himself while under pressure and therefore the blood hounds of the news media were able to tear him to pieces, they destroyed his political career and there can be no doubt they also destroyed his life, all based on hearsay. Finally, when you consider that he served as a councillor for more than 26 years, surely if he had these strong views regarding disabilities it would have been known before now. Regarding the investigation by the police, they have dropped the case through lack of evidence. This suggests that the whole case was a miscarriage of justice, created by the news media.
