A 200-year-old statue at an historic country park has been destroyed by vandals.

The statue of Venus at Mount Edgcumbe on the Rame Peninsula is believed to have been damaged beyond repair on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Mount Edgcumbe said: "It is with heavy heart that we have to report today that due to mindless vandalism in the Italian Garden at Mount Edgcumbe, an irreplaceable statue has been destroyed.

"Over 200 years old, the statue of Venus de Medici which has stood on the Belvedere for centuries has been destroyed in a moment of madness.

"It is unlikely due to the damage that the statue can be repaired."

"The police have been informed and we will keep you updated if we have any further news."

Mount Edgcumbe manager Ian Berry said: "The statue was pushed off its plinth, the head and legs broke off, parts of the hands broke off. The damage was quite extensive.

"A specialist restorer had a look at it and thinks he can restore it. We have now got to find out how much it would be and decide what we're going to do.

"It would be nice to restore it as a replica just wouldn't be the same."

Mr Berry said he was shocked at the discovery. He said: "We don't get a lot of problems with vandalism down here. It just seemed wanton and random."
