NEWLYN'S raft race is being put back on the map this weekend, raising money for its Christmas lights display.

A day of fun on Sunday starts at 10am and includes food stalls, live music, welly- throwing, a raffle, tug-of-war competitions and a beer tent, with the race at 2.30pm. There will also be a magician, face-painting and a bouncy castle.

There was no race last summer due to funding and insurance problems.

Committee chairman Marcia Bell said the event was "missed terribly last year", but community spirit had brought it back in 2013 to help meet the £8,000 fundraising target for the lights.

Mrs Bell said rafts were being secretly constructed in barns and sheds for what should be a thrilling spectacle.

"I'm really excited about it," she said.

"The reality of it happening has been huge; everyone has come together brilliantly.

"It's going to be lots of fun and hopefully put the raft race back on the map."
