The age of chivalry returned to Cornwall as knights donned suits of armour and did battle on horseback.
The first of a series of summer festivals in Falmouth marked the official start of the Pendennis Castle Grand Mediaeval Joust.
For two days each week, visitors to the iconic fort will be transported back in time with the sight, smells and entertainment of an authentic medieval celebration.
Wearing the colours of their region – north, south, east and west – and armed with a lance, the troupe of four courageous knights will do battle daily in the main arena.
Amy Hulyer, of organisers English Heritage, said visitors will have the chance to meet the knights, choose a champion and discover the secrets of armour and weaponry as they are dressed in preparation for combat by their squires.
The joust started yesterday and runs again today, then each Wednesday and Thursday between 10.30am and 5pm for three weeks, with tickets priced at £9.60 for adults and £5.80 for children.
