'Disability row' councillor Collin Brewer: I won't resign

Collin Brewer, the Cornwall councillor who said disabled children "should be put down", has told protesters he has no intention of resigning after he was confronted outside a meeting.

Mr Brewer, pictured right, who was re-elected to Cornwall Council in May after resigning in February, was reportedly given a police escort as he attended the East Sub-Area Planning Committee in Liskeard yesterday.

The 69-year-old came under renewed pressure from protesters after he allegedly com pared disabled children to deformed lambs in an interview with the Disability News Service (DNS) last month. But James Ball, from Camborne, who organised a protest march against Mr Brewer, said: "He told us the interview he did with Disability News had been taken out of context, and had been misquoted. He said he was a man of Christian values who respected all forms of life. Mr Brewer said he would not be resigning."
