A study has found death rates in young people across the county are relatively low compared to other areas of the UK.

Public Health England's new website, Longer Lives, launched to drive public awareness on health, has published information that allows people to see local statistics for Cornwall, Devon and Somerset about killers such as heart disease, cancer and strokes.

The research gives people the opportunity to compare the county's mortality rates with other areas with similar populations, incomes and levels of health.

Professor Deb Lapthorne, centre director for the three counties, said that information on Cornwall's death toll was positive.

"Overall the data for Devon, Cornwall and Somerset shows that the premature death rate in the area is mainly low," said Professor Lapthorne.

However, the professor noted that avoidable deaths varies across the county in line with deprivation.

"It is also important to understand that although the data shows the overall picture for each local authority area, we know, for example, that in authorities such as Cornwall, deprivation and subsequently premature death rates will vary significantly between wards."
