The Western Morning News is moving its headquarters back into the heart of Plymouth city centre.

Along with its sister newspaper The Herald, the WMN is to move back into the centre of the city after 20 years based at Derriford.

Both titles moved to their purpose built offices in Derriford in 1993. But, as of Sunday June 30, staff will be based at new headquarters in Millbay, Plymouth. The move will see 160 staff flood back into the city centre, based at the 5-11 building on Millbay Road.

Blanche Sainsbury, managing director of South West Media Group which publishes the Western Morning News and The Herald, said she believes the move would make the papers even more accessible to readers. She said: "Since we have been based in Derriford, if you wanted to talk to one of our journalists or place an advert with us, you had to get in a car.

"We are moving to the city centre where we are going to be able to interact with people far more easily.

"Being back in the city puts us at the heart of local trade. It will make us feel like we are at the hub of the regeneration that is taking place around Millbay. Bringing our staff back there can only be good for local businesses."

Both papers formerly resided on New George Street before moving to the building, dubbed "The Ship", at Plymouth International Medical and Technology Park. It was designed by architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, who also designed The Eden Project and Heathrow Terminal 3. Sir Nicholas's creation has won five architectural awards.

The building has been put up for sale by previous WMN owners, the Daily Mail and General Trust.

Local World took over Northcliffe Media – the regional publishing arm of Daily Mail and General Trust – and Iliffe News and Media, on December 30 last year.
