THE courage of three lifeboat crewmen from Port Isaac has been honoured with the presentation of gallantry medals by the Duke of Kent.

Helmsman Damien Bolton, 32, received a Silver Medal and crew members Nicola-Jane Bradbury, 40, and Matthew Main, 30, were both awarded Bronze Medals for their part in the rescue of a fisherman in April last year.

The Duke, president of the RNLI, presented the medals at the lifesaving charity's annual awards ceremony in London.

The three volunteers launched the inshore lifeboat in force 4 to 5 winds on April 8 last year to rescue Peter Sleeman and his son Paul after they were swept into rough water very close to the cliffs near Tregardock.

The RNLI said Mr Bolton used great seamanship to reach the two men, who were struggling to stay above the crashing surf. Both were pulled into the boat, but Peter Sleeman, 60, died later.

RNLI operations director Michael Vlasto said the rescue was carried out in very dangerous conditions.

"The crew were aware of the risk they were exposing themselves to, but felt that the potential of saving a life outweighed that risk," he said.

"Although this rescue was also marked by tragedy, it is a testament to their bravery, skill and tenacity that one of the men survived and made a full recovery."

Paul Sleeman, 27, who lives near St Teath, said later he owed his life to the three.

"The family would like to pass on their sincere congratulations to Damien, Nicki and Matt, three truly amazing people, on their very worthy awards," he said.

"Without their skills, bravery and determination, I wouldn't be here today.

"My life was saved with seconds to spare.

"The huge effort they went to to recover Pete, which enabled us to lay him to rest, is something that the whole family will always be grateful for. The family is also grateful for the continuous help and support during this tragic and difficult time from all at Port Isaac RNLI."
