There have been council and MP calls for increased funding for tourist information centres (TICs) and for the Westcountry to get its "fair share" of tourism cash.

Chairman of Honiton TIC, in Devon, Colin Wright, says more help is needed from East Devon District Council and Devon County Council to maintain centres.

"The tourist information centre has a very important function in the Westcountry," he added.

"If the A303 is dualled from Ilminster to Honiton, they will become even more important to the market and coastal towns of East Devon.

He points to other regions, such as Yorkshire which recently secured the Grand Depart of the Tour de France, where TICs are funded by their councils to the tune of £12.4million.

"At the moment, no funding is available except for a grant from Honiton Town Council, which has been gratefully received," he added.

"If it was not for the town council, the tourist information centre would have closed a few years ago."

East Devon MP Neil Parish has pointed out that Wales gets more of the tourism grant and there was a need to distribute it more equally.

He added: "That is where there is an argument. As far as I am concerned, we need to give more and spread it more equally and therefore get a bit more for England and the Westcountry.

"We don't get our fair share. That is what we need to do."

He said: "When you go to a town or area you don't know, the first thing you do is go in the tourist information centre. It is important to have this. What we don't want to do is close everything down."

An East Devon District Council spokesman said: "Tourism is an important part of the local economy and we support it in many different ways, including providing the use of council-owned buildings for several tourist information centres.

"We are always happy to talk to local groups about how we can provide the right help to support tourism but, of course, this has to be considered against our wider budget and the ongoing need to save money in the face of national funding cuts."
