SEVERE weather across west Cornwall left homes without power last night as high winds brought down power cables.
The high winds were causing problems until early this morning, with Penzance Community Fire Station called at 6.00am to respond to a blown transformer at Penberth Cove, near Porthcurno.
Western Power reported that hundreds of homes across the region were affected by the power failures, including St Buryan, Mousehole, Newlyn and Penzance, where 100 homes in the Heamoor area had no electricity - live cables carrying up to 53,000 volts and 11,000 volts were said to be cut off.
Yesterday evening Western Power said that they were prepared for the weather conditions.
The service reported its team was working in "dangerous conditions" with winds of up to 70mph and heavy rain.
A spokesperson said this morning: "We have had numerous faults across Cornwall.
"We have worked through the night."
The adverse weather also prompted police to warn motorists of potential hazards and to be extra careful on the roads, with a fallen tree on the A30 at Laity Lane in Lelant reported at 8.20pm.
The MET Office issued a yellow warning of rain yesterday evening.
The power supply is said to be back this morning.
