A CHARITY which supports women suffering from postnatal depression is calling for volunteers to help run help groups across the county. The Angela Harrison Charitable Trust, which was set up in memory of Angela Harrison from Newquay who took her own life after developing puerperal psychosis, is looking for volunteers to help run groups for women experiencing postnatal depression. It comes after the first successful round of training has finished. The charity is working with Pentreath Ltd, a Cornish charity promoting good mental health through personal development, education and employment, to train volunteers in how to set up and run support groups across the county. The groups will allow for women to do have some time to themselves, while their children are cared for. Anthony Harrison, Angela's husband who founded the Trust's in her name, is urging people to come forward. He said: "The groups are set up for women experiencing postnatal depression where their children will be cared for, and they will get the chance to do something for themselves, be it enjoying a massage, a facial, drawing or just chatting with others over tea and biscuits. A key issue for sufferers is the feeling that they are alone, and we know that support groups can be crucial in helping women at what can be a very stressful time." There are two levels of involvement – full training to run the groups, or as a supporter to help out. The groups will be starting out in Falmouth, Newquay and Liskeard with the aim that more will start over time to reach as many women as possible. Mr Harrison continued: "Maybe you have suffered from postnatal depression yourself, know someone who has, or you are just a warm and friendly person of any age who wants to give something back – whoever you are, just pick up the phone and find out more. "Our current volunteers come from all walks of life – older, younger, mums or just people who like to help others. Some have personal experience of postnatal depression, others have close friends or family but either way it's a great way to help. "This is a chance to make a real difference and be involved in something worthwhile, and you only need to commit to one afternoon a week." Full accredited training will be provided along with ongoing support and travel expenses.
