A renowned artist has created a new work of art to mark the reopening of an iconic structure.

Brian Pollard's painting of regeneration in Plymouth will be part of Devonport Column's reinstatement in the city.

It will form the centrepiece of a larger exhibition of work by children from nearby Marlborough Primary School depicting the landmark.

Mr Pollard said: "The regeneration of Devonport is quite spectacular and it appears to create and celebrate a diverse community which was always a main feature of the area."

Plymouth resident Janet Gilbert has been selected from fellow community members to open the column tomorrow.

The 71-year-old said: "I'll probably have tears in my eyes. It's wonderful, I'm so excited."

Ms Gilbert, who was once told off by police for scaling the tower, said: "I was always interested in it but it was a bit of a taboo, hidden behind a big wall."

The schoolchildren were invited to workshops with the artist, who taught them about the landscape of the city.

Dawn Hackworthy, of Marlborough Primary School, said, "Brian really captured the children's imaginations and got them excited about what's happening here in Devonport.

"The Column has always been a big part of the landscape but none of the children are old enough to remember it being open before."

The Grade I-listed monument was originally intended to support a statue of William IV, but 19th-century residents failed to find enough money to fund it.

Mr Pollard added: "The idea of the project is to communicate a sense of the area using bright colours, patterns and rhythms to produce a happy image of the Plymouth area, surely the greatest English city by the sea."
