Train told to tone down 'two-second toots'

The driver of a popular land train has been asked by police to stop tooting at passers-by following a number of complaints from people unhappy at being whistled at by the train.

Geoff Warmington, who has owned the surf rider train in Newquay for 18 years, says he has agreed with the police only to toot to children, following the complaints.

The train provides an alternative fun bus service covering various destinations, including the town's popular zoo.

The news has sparked a strong reaction from some residents who have said they cannot understand the decision.

But Mr Warmington accepted that his driver, who has manned the service for more than ten years, may get carried away occasionally and is happy to toot less.

He said: "The police have had complaints about excessive whistling and an officer came to talk to me. We can carry on tooting but not excessively. He was tooting excessively and it is quite loud for anybody next to the land train.

"Children love being tooted at. We can still do that. We get a lot of waves back."

Police Inspector Dave Meredith said he had no knowledge of the issue but that he believed an amicable compromise would have been made to keep the train operator and the public happy. But a number of residents in the town have said they are unhappy about the decision.

Carolyn Agliano said: "We live in a holiday resort and are trying our best to appeal to families. Our train brings not only pleasure to so many but also drops passengers at various points where they can spend their much-needed money at the zoo, swimming pool and on cream teas and then come back to the town at the end of the day.

"I meet my young grandson from his nursery at lunchtime and the train passes us and toots us on our way and the passengers wave. Who is it harming?"

Gemma Wilkins added: "My two boys look forward to the summer when the train goes past. They stand there waiting for a toot and wave back. It makes their day.

"I cannot understand why people would complain about a two-second toot."
