Comedian Phill Jupitus took Edinburgh Fringe Festival by storm last year with his show You're Probably Wondering Why I've Asked You Here... In it, Phill plays the part of three extraordinary (but deceased) characters. They are the late Vernon Herschel Harley, a legend of stage and screen who died at the age of 114 just last Thursday. He has worked with everybody in theatre and cinema and describes himself as "quite lively for a dead chap". The late Kurt Schiffer was the Korvettenkapitan of the U42B out of Hamburg part of the German Navy's "Wolf Packs", which were the scourge of the Atlantic shipping lanes. He died in 1944. The late Phill Jupitus died on June 24, 2052 on the eve of his 90th birthday. With the help of the audience, Phill's show learns more about these three men... who all bear a striking resemblance to the Never Mind the Buzzcocks star.

You're Probably Wondering Why I've Asked You Here... is at St Ives Guildhall tomorrow night at 8pm.

Lunchtime concerts will swell arts centre's coffers

The Flavel Arts Centre in Dartmouth is staging a season of popular half-hourly Thursday lunchtime concerts, starting next week with music from the Great American Songbook of the 20s and 30s. Jim Bentham (piano) and John Key (on double bass) – professionally known as J2 Jazz – will be performing numbers from this popular toe-tapping era, likely to get the audience singing along. On Thursday, June 13, the extremely talented local saxophone quartet comprising James Harris, Phil Watson, Mike Jones and Doug Cotton return with more upbeat sounds for sunny days. And finally, a special treat on July 11 with a performance from a young up-and-coming gifted guitarist from Plymouth. David Cotter, pictured, will delight with a programme which contains an eclectic mix of Spanish, classical and virtuoso music. The 30-minute concerts are free, but you do need to collect a ticket from the box office. A retiring collection will be in aid of the Flavel Arts Centre.
