Newlyn residents came out in numbers last week to take advantage of an amnesty day community clean-up project.

Neighbours joined together at the Gwavas Estate to clear rubbish from their homes and get rid of any unwanted household items.

The spring clean took place on an April 2, and was organised by the Penwith Housing Association and the Gwavas Residents' Association, with support from Cornwall Council's 'Clean Cornwall' group.

Brian Keast, the Public Health and Protection Enforcement Officer at Cornwall Council, who organised the event, was happy with the outcome.

"It was a big success – we had to order more skips," said Brian.

"We had around 10-15 residents helping out on the day, and nearly everyone took advantage of the skips on the estate," he added.

Children even played a part in the clear up, helping out by picking up litter.

Police and fire services also attended, informing residents about carbon monoxide safety and performing security checks at properties.

"The event is hoped to encourage residents to take pride in their estate and to keep a clean and safe environment to live in," added Mr Keast.
