Padstow mussel sculpture dead in the water?

A GIANT sculpture of a mussel is unlikely to be placed on Padstow's harbour wall after the public voted overwhelmingly against it. Just 22 out of the 419 who voted at a public consultation event, and on-line, were in favour of the sculpture – representing just 5 per cent support for the scheme. The five-metre high sculpture was the brainchild of Trevone artist Andy Nicholls. His piece is titled Mytilus, and celebrates the hooked Padstow mussel, a type of mollusc unique to the area. But it is now unlikely to go ahead following such strong objections from the public. In a statement, Padstow Town Council said they and the Harbour Commissioners had released the results earlier than anticipated due to public feeling. The council added: "These results will be taken to the next Harbour Commissioners and Town Council meetings as both organisations stated they would base any support for the project on the results of a public consultation." For a special report see the Cornish Guardian next Friday.
