CAMBORNE 31 REDRUTH 43 Redruth retained the Rodda's Milk Cup in an entertaining game played on Easter Monday, though both sides rested a number of key players for next weekend's important league fixtures, reports Bill Hooper. After four league defeats it will have done the squad a power of good to record a win in preparation for their trip to Dry Leas on Saturday to face Henley Hawks. Despite playing with the strong wind at their backs first half the Reds had to wait until the 19th minute for their opening unconverted try scored by Tom Duncan. Sadly The No.8 was forced to retire from the fray with a knock to his knee shortly after. Redruth went on to score further first half tries through Tom Notman, who had a fine all round game playing at centre and winger Ben Drew, with fly-half Ashley Hosking adding both conversions. Camborne's sole reply during the opening half was an unconverted try scored by winger Aaron Hunt as they trailed 19-5 at the break. The Reds increased their advantage soon after half-time when man-of-the-match Notman scored his second try, a kick through which he followed up to beat the cover in the top corner, followed shortly after by trademark break from the base of the scrum by scrum-half Greg Goodfellow for try number six in the same corner. Camborne fought back and were awarded a penalty-try following a series of scrums in the clubhouse corner converted by Grant Thirlby, followed by a try for winger Adam Notman to cut the deficit to 29-17. Ben Drew, another who caught the eye, then grabbed his second try for the Reds with Hosking again adding the extras to further stretch their advantage. Camborne, who never gave up fought back with two further tries scored through prop Nigel Endean and No. 8 Martin Goldsworthy both converted by Richie Kevern, whilst a final Redruth try was scored in between by replacement Matt Bowden with Hosking again on target with the extras. The referee's final whistle kept the "old churn" back at the Redruth clubhouse for a while longer!
