Images chart a love affair with the cruel coast

An exhibition of maritime photographs described as a "visual love poem" of the coastline is on show in North Devon this week.

The work of well-known Bideford photographer Dave Green, the display features a collection of work which had its premiere at North Carolina Aquarium in the USA a year ago, under the title Great Britain's Graveyard of the Atlantic.

Dave Green, who runs a range of photographic courses throughout the year, explained that the stretch of coast he has concentrated on became known variously as the "sailors' grave", "cruel coast" and "iron coast" because of its reputation for claiming the lives of seamen and their vessels from medieval times to the present. Huge tides, dangerous currents, changeable winds, sandbars, high vertical cliffs and rocky reefs have all contributed to the losses.

Dave has been exploring, studying, and immersing himself in the coast and its history for seven years.

"To me, our coast isn't a stroll along a sandy beach on a summer's day, it is a hidden coast, found only through a vertiginous climb down a steep cliff path or by leaving the beach and trekking over seaweed-strewn boulders at low tide," he said. "This is a wild coast, unpopulated by holidaymakers, the domain of sea birds. It is also a historic coast where millions of years can be seen in the layers of strata of an eroded cliff face and the more recent past can be found in rusting ship parts."

The resulting images – which will tour three American maritime museums later this year – are sometimes made up of more than 100 separate photographs.

"This show is intended to be my visual love poem to the sublimely beautiful and hidden coast of North Devon," he added.

Sea Caves, Shipwrecks and the Rocky Shore by Dave Green is at The Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe until April 7. It is open daily from 10am to 3pm.
