Several lots in the antique furniture section of Eldreds sale of antiques, art, silver and jewellery on Tuesday stand out for their style and quality.
Firstly, is a handsome pair of French Empire upholstered seat and back chairs. Furniture produced in the period of Napoleon's French First Empire (1804-1815) is elaborate and Neoclassical in style (£600-£800).
Eldreds have several delicate and smaller styles from the Edwardian period. Perhaps the most unusual is a very pretty walnut double-ended sofa with partially-buttoned padded back and upholstered seat, on turned legs with castors (£150-£250).
In a large and varied pictures section are three watercolours by the well-known naval artist Frank Watson Wood – one of which is a local scene: HMS Defiance, The Hamoaze Devonport. Signed and dated 1935, the picture measures 25x60cm and has a guide of £1,000-£1,500.
Also of local interest is a large watercolour by landscape and marine artist Samuel Philips Jackson – Old Hulks at Plymouth is dated for the 1870s (£400-£500). A naval watercolour by E Tufnell of HMS Bulwark, has a guide of £180-£220.
In an extensive works of art section, is a collection of marine ivory scrimshaw. A fid or needle is profusely-decorated (£200-£300), also a decorated scraping tool, and a walrus tusk decorated with primitive scenes of walrus hunting and packs of dogs (£300-£500).
The ceramics and glass section has a small ceramic plaque painted and signed by local artist Beryl Cook of her beloved cat Cedric. The artist gave these plaques out to family and friends.Guide £200-£250.
The watches section contains a typical selection of quality watches, including Jaeger-LeCoultre, Omega, Rolex, Waltham and Tissot. Of particular note is an Omega 18ct gold cased gentleman's wrist watch on leather strap (£200-£300).
Asilver-cased half hunter pocket watch bears the name of novelist and playwright John Galsworthy who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932 and was perhaps best known for The Forsyte Saga.
The watch comes with type-written provenance from Mr Galsworthy's estate and other related ephemera (£60-£100).
Eldreds' 220-lot jewellery section contains a wide selection of quality gold, silver and platinum-mounted gem-set and antique necklaces, rings, brooches, earrings, bracelets and cufflinks.
Notable amongst these is an Art Nouveau moonstone-set pendant of open scrolling form, suspended on a fringe necklace (£200-£300).
The silver section encompasses 100 lots of Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and later silver with notable items including a cased set of four Sampson Mordan & Co silver and enamelled menu holders (£600-£800).
